Your Complete Guide To Valentine's Day 2023

Holidays, birthdays, and Valentine’s Day can be confusing times for daters. One may have high expectations for an extravagant weekend getaway, while the other may not feel inclined to celebrate a “Hallmark Holiday.” Every relationship is unique, with its own set of needs and expectations.

First and foremost, you need to know what are your partner’s needs and expectations. Simply ask the person you are dating, Do you enjoy celebrating Valentine’s Day? What would your perfect Valentine’s Day look like? How does this sound :::insert plan here::: ?

In order to get to know your date, you have to ask questions. Communication is key. Plus, it will help you plan a Valentine’s Day suited to both of your needs. Every couple is different, and you should always do what feels right to you, and your date.

One reader tells us how he and his wife celebrate the day after Valentine’s Day, and call it Serendipity Day:

“Instead of celebrating a Hallmark Holiday, we celebrate the day I said I love you to the woman with whom I had so many serendipity moments. We call it Serendipity Day and because it is right after Valentine's Day, we don't have any trouble getting reservations! We spend the day either going to museums or art galleries or renting a nice Airbnb in the big city.”

It shows an effort in creating their own special holiday, and it allows them to celebrate their relationship on this one day. Not every couple will have their own holiday, and that’s okay too!

Valentine’s Day can be your day to celebrate your relationship, and you can still make it unique. The matchmakers here at Ambiance Matchmaking have compiled a list of creative things to do on Valentine’s Day to point you in the right direction.

These date ideas are meant for couples who opt out of the normal dinner date routine and are looking for a more creative way to spend the day.

What is a good Valentine's Day date?

Here are 12 romantic Valentine's Day date ideas for you and your date.

1. Cook an at-home dinner

Anyone can make a reservation at a fancy restaurant, but cooking dinner takes skill. We recommend cooking together if it’s something you and your date both enjoy. Nothing brings people together like cooking and sharing a meal. Decide what to cook and buy the ingredients before your date arrives. And, don't forget the wine!

BONUS: Cards Against Humanity is a great post-dinner game. It's a fun way to get to know things about your date that you wouldn't normally think to ask. Most of the questions can be ridiculous so you can have a good laugh.

2. Make a bonfire on the beach

Grab a blanket, marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate, and make s’mores over the open bonfire. If you’re lucky enough to live close to the beach (and it’s legal), even better. Getting outside of the house, and cuddling up next to a fire, is low-key but still damn romantic. This can also be a great post-dinner activity.

3. Go ice skating

If you have a beautiful ice skating rink in your city, like Chicago’s Maggie Daley Park Skating Ribbon, grab your skates and do a couple of laps! It’s a great way to get in some exercise, get close to your date to make sure she doesn’t fall, and end the date with a hard-earned hot toddy or mulled wine.

4. Visit a museum or art gallery

See what your local museum or art gallery is offering for Valentine’s Day. You may hit the jackpot if there’s a special tour or event, which normally is accompanied by champagne. If there isn’t anything happening, hit one up anyway and bring your own bubbly, though you may have to wait to pop it until you leave the premises:)

5. Go to a comedy show

Your local comedy club is sure to have a special themed night for Valentine’s Day. What better way to spend the whole night than laughing? Laughing and generally goofing off is one of the most rewarding things you can do together. It’s proven to bring couples closer, and it’s FUN!

6. Tour a brewery

Pick a local brewery and signup for a tour. You get to learn how your favorite local brews are made, and taste each one along the way. Many breweries offer food, so you can enjoy a dinner together while comparing favorite brews.

7. Plan your own wine & tapas crawl

Plan a wine and tapas crawl where you try food and wine from different restaurants in a specific neighborhood. Here's how to do it: pick a neighborhood that’s full of great restaurants or pubs, choose five or six that you want to try, and split an appetizer and glass of wine at each one. It’s way more interesting and fun than sitting down at one restaurant the whole night!

8. Stage your own (blind) wine tasting

The perfect date for wine lovers! Such a great way to enjoy a variety of tastes, compare wines, educate your palette, and have fun with your date. If you’re lucky enough to live close to a vineyard, see if you can setup a tasting at dusk. What’s more romantic than sipping wine while watching the sunset? Another idea is to host your own (blind) wine tasting. Choose a theme for your wines, setup the blind tastings, have your date try to identify each wine, then switch turns! You can even add an extra element of disguise by blindfolding your date with a scarf.

9. Take a spa day

Your girlfriend will love you for this one! Plan a couples day at a spa or mud bath house. Hey, guys need a day to treat themselves too. Most spas offer packages, especially around Valentine’s Day, that include a sauna, massage, facial, manicure/pedicure, mud baths, and more.

10. Tour your city by bike

Rent bikes and tour your city together! Is there an area that you’ve been wanting to check out, or a new bike path? Head out and explore together. Bring a picnic for extra bonus points!

11. Listen to live music

Check your local clubs and bars to see if there’s any live music happening. A lot of venues will have jazz, classical, contemporary, and late-night jam sessions. Our Chicago favorite is The Green Mill, a swanky cocktail bar that frequently features Spanish guitarists.

12. Rent a cool Airbnb

This is one of our favorite date night options. There are so many cool places you can find on Airbnb, such as Cabins, lofts, treehouses, boats, castles, art galleries, farms, you name it! Check-in as early as possible (normally 2-3pm) to get a full day’s worth of exploring the area and living a different life for one day! You can also check out Airbnb’s Experiences to see if there are any cool events going on in the area.
