It’s about the feeling you get when you turn a corner and see a pink treehouse-shaped bakery next to a punk rock barber shop. It’s for couples who think holding hands in the rain is a vibe, not a problem.
My partner and I still talk about our trip there. It was messy, a little disorganized, and perfect. Here’s what we learned.

Meet in the Rose Room. I found him a vintage field guide to mushrooms. He found me a children’s book about a depressed wolf. We still have them. It cost $12 and is one of our favorite memories.
Embrace the Weird:
You have to go to Voodoo Doughnut. Don’t be a snob about it. The line is a spectacle—embrace it. We got a Memphis Mafia (bananas, peanut butter, chocolate) and an Old Dirty Bastard (oreos and peanut butter) and ate them on a curb, people-watching and getting powdered sugar everywhere. It was stupid and fun and exactly what we needed.
Find the Quiet:
After the sugar rush, walk up to the International Rose Test Garden. It’s free. The smell is insane. We found a quiet bench overlooking the city and just sat there for ages, not saying much. It’s a beautiful, peaceful reset.
How to Actually Eat in Portland (Hint: Follow Your Nose)

Our rule was simple: if it smells good, get it. We’d get two completely different things from two different carts—say, a stunningly good lamb gyro from Wolf & Bear’s and a pile of Vietnamese garlic noodles—and share them at a wobbly picnic table. It’s the best, most affordable food adventure you can have. No arguing over what to eat. You get it all.
For a sit-down meal, we still dream about the biscuits at Screen Door. We went for a late breakfast to avoid the infamous line. It’s Southern comfort food that feels like a hug. Split the chicken and waffles. You won’t regret it.
When the Rain Comes (And It Will)
Don’t hide from it. This is when Portland gets cozy.
We got caught in a sudden downpour and ducked into The Academy Theater, a second-run movie house that serves pizza and local beer. We saw a terrible action movie, ate a whole pizza, and had a blast. It was unplanned and perfect.
